John Harrell was my best friend from the age of nine years, our ages being the same, and that friendship continued until this day, although John passed away 31 May 1975. We were closely associated all through our boyhood days until we were grown. John was an outstanding young man, having been reared by honorable parents and taught from early childhood to live an honest and religious life. He had high moral standards and the courage to stand up for right. He was bright, energetic, industrious, upright, kind, generous, quick to decide a matter, seldom wrong, unselfish, devoted to his parents, and family name. He had character, and good old-time common sense. I can honestly say that on numerous occasions John guided me in right decisions during our talks as we watched the moon and stars sitting on the side of the dirt road which ran in front of our homes. He was always just a little better than I in all school athletics and running, jumping, and climbing trees. But, one thing I always won, was our horse racing. I had a red mule, he had a fine horse, but that mule always won the race. After I left Lattimore I always visited John and Ruth when I came home to visit my folks. John never failed to mention that little red mule. "That was the fastest mule I ever saw", he would comment. I know that I am a much better person by having being associated with the Harrell family and I am proud to have had John as a friend. I cherish the memories and consider it a privilege to have known him.
